Nick Brokenshire

Nick Brokenshire is a third generation dairy farmer from the Fleurieu Peninsula. After finishing high school, Nick joined the family enterprise at Mount Compass to work with his parents, Mandy and well known South Australian politician Robert Brokenshire. He took on managing the farm in 2006, and two years later was selected to participate in the national pilot of the Developing Dairy Leaders Program established by Dairy Australia and Australian Dairy Farmers (ADF).

Thought to be the youngest person to lead the South Australian Dairyfarmers’ Association in its 80-year history, Nick joined the board in 2011 when he was 24 because he believed it was important that the next generation had a say in guiding the industry’s future. “It was the next logical step after doing the leadership program. This is a vibrant industry and I’m keen to make sure that it is viable, not just for me but for other young farmers, for many years to come,” he says.

Today Nick continues to run the family’s 350-cow enterprise, which produces its own fodder and feed concentrates, and incorporates the Roslyn Vale and Roslyn Amdena Jersey studs. He is a member of the Mount Compass Jersey Cattle Club and the Mount Jagged Dairy Discussion Group, and mentors secondary students participating in Dairy Australia’s innovative Cows Create Careers program. Also an active member of his local community and a keen sportsman, Nick has captained the Mount Compass A grade football team for almost 10 years.
