MEDIA RELEASE: SADA is encouraging all Australians to think about their bone health during Healthy Bones Action Week: 12-18 August.

We're encouraging everyone to participate in Healthy Bones Action Week and will be promoting on our social pages, we look forward to seeing the community sharing their enthusiasm for bone health.

The Primary School years are a crucial time for Aussie kids to build strong bones for life and ensure their daily routine includes the three steps to maintaining good bone health. The dairy industry has the Dairy Health Teaching resources to support this effort.

All South Australians can look after and maintain strong bones by incorporating three simple actions to their daily routine:

  • Consume: calcium-rich dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt
  • Exercise: Do weight bearing exercise, such as running or playing a sport
  • Vitamin D: Through safe sun exposure.

Adulthood is a busy time: juggling work, raising a family and managing financial responsibilities. Remember that a healthy diet and an active lifestyle can help you get the balance just right. Test your bone health knowledge here.

Peak bone mass is reached when you’re in your late twenties, and, after this it is vital to continue to get adequate calcium:

  • Exercise and vitamin D to maintain the bones you've built.
  • Poor bone health affects 2 in 3 Australians
  • Can lead to serious fractures which can cause chronic pain

Dairy foods are tasty and can easily be added to your favourite recipes. Incorporating dairy into your diet is easier than you think. Enjoy a cup of milk in a breakfast smoothie, add two slices of cheese to your lunch sandwich or salad, have ¾ cup of yoghurt as an afternoon snack, or mix ½ cup of ricotta into your dinner pasta.
