Fuel: The State Government’s Fuel Security Roundtable advises there are no current supply problems within the four-to-six-week forward program. Refineries reportedly hold around three months’ supply, with no vessels being diverted. The greater risk is cost. Red Sea tensions have lifted global oil prices and may lengthen shipping times. Diesel is already exceeding $2 per litre in some areas, while the end of the remaining fuel excise discount on 2 August is expected to add about 16 cents per litre plus GST. SADA continues to emphasise diesel’s essential role in milk collection, feed supply and farm operations.

Bird flu: Two further H5 bird flu detections have been confirmed in greater crested terns at Semaphore Beach and Long Beach near Robe. This brings South Australia’s total to seven, all in wild seabirds. Importantly, there are no detections in poultry, livestock or agricultural production, and no evidence of mass bird mortalities. Surveillance continues. Members should maintain sound biosecurity and avoid sick or dead wild birds.

United States tariffs: Australian agriculture has been dealt another trade setback, with the United States imposing a new 12.5% tariff on Australian exports, replacing the 10% tariff due to expire. The National Farmers’ Federation has described the decision as unnecessary and inconsistent with the spirit of the Australia–US Free Trade Agreement. Some major agricultural exports, including beef, appear exempt, but the measure adds uncertainty for exporters and reinforces the importance of diversified markets and continued advocacy for open, rules-based trade.

Locusts: Australian plague locust activity may resume in spring following increased activity after February’s rainfall. Egg laying has been detected in the Riverland, Mallee, Flinders Ranges and pastoral regions, with Eyre Peninsula also at risk. Hatching and hopper bands may emerge from mid-to-late September. Monitor bare ground, tracks and fence lines, record suspected egg beds, and report significant activity or swarms on 1800 084 881.
